How To: Incorporate Decorative Tiles Into Your Home

Another interior obsession for me at the moment is the use of decorative tiles. Again, it may be part of this whole move towards the bohemian, but I feel like decorative tiles contribute to the feel of a room in a subtle way – just adding an additional layer of colour and texture without being too intrusive.

Now that I’m renting and I can’t spontaneously decide to just tile any random wall or floor, I’m looking for ways to incorporate this look into my home. Inspired by my friends amazing update of Japaz (the website doesn’t show the new interior yet unfortunately) using antique Moroccan styled tiled wallpaper:

If the idea of wallpaper doesn’t appeal to you, tiled artwork may be a better fit. Jai of Ahoy Trader in Byron Bay, Australia is creating amazing pieces using tiles – ranging from individual tiles on a small scale to massive tiled murals.

The other idea to incorporate this look into your home (without breaking the budget, or your lease) would be to create YOUR OWN piece of artwork using tiles. I’ve yet to do this yet, waiting for the next rainy Saturday to come around, but essentially the idea is to create a ‘poster’ of tiles. What you’ll need:

- a backing board – plywood should work fine – in whatever size you like

- ceramic or a strong craft glue, even plain old superglue will work fine

- tiles! start collecting a mish mash of tiles you love. I like looking through etsy, garage sales, market stalls and ebay.

- grout & grouting equipment – you can buy this from your local hardware store

Then off you go! It’s as simple as arranging the tiles in a way that you are happy with, gluing down and grouting in. I’d very much suggest laying the tiles out first before you glue them down so you’re 100% happy with it.

What you will end up with will be quite a heavy piece, so it may actually work better as a piece you lean up against a wall on top of a mantlepiece or on a sturdy sideboard, rather then hung.

Have you incorporated decorative tiles into your home? Are you planning to? I’d love to see photos so please tweet them to me via @emmajanevlogs!
